PROGRAM: The speakers of the evening have to go to another meeting this evening so
we moved the program to the head of the list tonight. Karen Oleski introduced
Dr.Josh Leute and Diver Mike Ripple. They are both involved in SCUBA diving in
Lake Michigan.
Dr. Leute told us about the history of the many, many shipwrecks in both Lake
Michigan and in the Great Lakes overall. There are 2500 registered wrecks in Lake
Michigan and they believe that there may be 150,000 in all of the lakes, Dr.Leute
told of the history of some of the more prominent wrecks between Sheboygan and
Milwaukee. Of note is the change in what you may do to the wrecks. Until about 10
years ago divers were cutting up and salvaging parts from the wrecks. The state has
since passed a law that forbids the taking of anything from them. The penalties are
severe. It is believed that this law will be relaxed somewhat in the future.
Diver Mike told of the equipment used by the divers. Many improvements have been
incorporated in recent years. Mike told how in 1975 one could only see a foot or so
in the murky waters near the bottom of the lake. Now due to the cleansing action of
the Zebra Mussels the water is clear and visibility is up to about 100 feet.
A very interesting program ,Karen. Thanks for bring the team.
