MEMBERS VISIT KAZAKSTAN

Thanks to our guest speaker Jan Meyle the club got a glimps of life in Almaty, Kazakstan.

Republic of Kazakhstan (latest spelling) with a population of 15 million

is a large country between the Caspian Sea, Russia and China.

It gained it’s independence from Russia in 1991. Religion there consists

of: 47% Sunni Muslim, 44% Russian Orthodox and 2% Protestant.

That 2% Protestant is were Jan enters the story. Her husband is a retired

missionary for a German Lutheran church located in Almaty.

Before Kazakhstan’s independence from

Russia the mission church had a very rough time.

Children caught going to church would be expelled

from school. Teachers were required

to watch for students going to Church.

The nation is not doing well with inflation in 2007 at 18%, unemployment at 7% and 14%

of the people below poverty.  Jan’s   husband is currently back there helping the Church.
