LOCAL LIBRARIES LAUNCH READ PROGRAM

The Port Washington, Saukville Public Libraries and the Middle School and High School libraries are jointly starting a community wide reading promotion.

The program is “One Book One Community” which is part of the “Character Counts” program. Each month a different book will be chosen that stimulates discussions on one of the pillars of good character.

Here Monica Treptow, librarian from the Middle and High schools talks about the program.

The first book to be read will be “Leaving Microsoft to Change the World” by John Wood. It’s the story of John Wood and the libraries he started in third world countries.

John was a sales executive for Microsoft. He happened on a picture of the mountains in Nepal and decided he needed a break and would climb those mountains. It was during the climb that they came to a small village that had just finished building a library. But this nice new library did not have one book in it. The village had no money left to buy books. When John returned home he and his father organized book drives to collect books for the little village. One year later he returned to the village with 1000 books.

John realized the great need for books in small villages. He quit his Microsoft job to build and fill libraries in other third world villages. He has now built about 3000 libraries.

After people get a chance to read the book the Librarians will facilitate discussion forums throughout the communities. Annie Bahringer, Adult Services Coordinator from the Port Washington Public Library, said that there will be several copies at each of the four libraries that can be checked out at kickoff time.

They are aiming for a February or March kick off.
