Washington Club
Newsletter for 9.10.08
There were 22 in attendance
including two Kiwanians from Sheboygan Early Club, Brad and Jason. Also we had Pat and Suzette
Tainter as guests. Lowell
won the 50/50 drawing of $13.00. Dinner was Chicken Parmesan with spaghetti.
We discussed changing our meeting
for next week to volunteering for the Possibility Playground. It was decided with a vote that we would meet
at Upper Lake Park
to volunteer at 6 pm. Wear your blue
Kiwanis shirt if you can. Afterwards we can go to Newport Shores
for drinks and dinner. Weldon will cancel our speaker for next week and will
also alert John at Newport
Shores that we aren’t
holding our regular meeting. Clearing
and preparation work has begun at the park:

Our program was Kathy Bentley
from Ozaukee County Advocates. Kathy is the President of the Board, lives in Port Washington, works at Rockwell Automation and had Ann
Tainter as a teacher.
She spoke of the Shelter Services
averaging 60-70 days as their primary service. Additionally they do 1)
counseling and support services, 2) outreach education programs at the middle
school level-teaching “healthy dating” and 3) they work with other volunteer
groups and churches to set up housekeeping for a transition back to the
community. Ozaukee County
advocates have celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2006. Many of the
victims arrive at the shelter with only the clothes on their back which is why
whenever there are clothing and personal item fund raisers it is gratefully
appreciated. Occasionally community or work groups will operate a “day of
caring” and volunteer to fix up the shelter. Currently they have 6 women and 5
children at the shelter (including 2 women from Port
Washington). And yes, there are male victims of abuse as well as
women. However, men are not placed in the same shelter and are often sent to
another city or placed in a motel.
Meeting was adjourned at 8
pm. Reminder that next weeks meeting
will be a volunteer session at Upper
Lake Park.
Also, there is a Board Meeting
this Saturday at 8 am at Rusty Anchor. Current board members plus next year’s
board are invited to attend.
