EASTER SEALS CAMP WAWBEEK

The camp has served those with special needs for over 70 years. Kiwanis WI-UM District has been a major supporter since their first major project, the swimming pool was added to the camp in the 1950s. In the 1980s Kiwanis sponsored a major restoration of the pool. Our past WI-MU governor Berry Hirsh sponsored  shade awning.

IMG8_0625Ken Saville, Executive Director of the camp was our speaker on May 6th. Their summer staff this year has grown to 85 people. A ratio of 1 staff to 3 campers is maintained.

Campers come from throughout the state.

Kids camping sessions are 2 weeks long and adult camping sessions are 1 week long. They are in full operation for 9 weeks during the summer. Outside of the full operation times they will do special sessions even in the winter.

Each year the WI-MU Governor takes on a project, such as the trailer in the picture, used to transport the campers. When the need arises Kiwanis steps up and delivers. Some of the other things Kiwanis has contributed are the dinning hall, a special wheelchair swing and wheelchair nature paths.

Ken pointed out there are many volunteer opportunities at the camp, especially getting ready for the summer season. Area Kiwanis clubs, Key clubs and Circle K clubs come in and do special projects. The projects range from grounds maintenance to working on craft projects with the campers. The West bend Key club spent three days there this spring.

In closing, Ken extended the invitation, any time you are in the vicinity stop in and visit.

KIWANIS HIGHWAY CLEANUP: This Saturday the 31st at 9:00am Eernisse Funeral Home.

BUILDERS CLUB’S SEASON FANIALY

Each year the Builders Club final activity is community clean up. They open it up to all TJ students. This year Gary & Carol Boehle from Kiwanis helped.

Six teams were sent out to such places as Upper Lake Park, Lower Lake Park, The Bike trail, Skate Board Park, and other parks.

After the clean up they gathered back at TJ for lunch and prizes. Awards were given for: The person who brought in the most aluminum cans before hand. The team that collected the most aluminum during the clean up. The team that collected the most trash.  And, the person that came the farthest to help. A random drawing was held giving away some nice prizes. We were all winners on this beautiful Saturday.

Fitness and You It’s not too late

Member Carol Boehle shared her expertise with the club.  She is a professional fitness trainer.

A quote from the literature Carol handed out sums up why it’s important to for everyone, no matter what your age, to exercise. “A higher quality of life for you as you age. Modern medicine has found all kinds of ways to keep you alive. You need to decide how you want to spend those extra years.”

There are two types of exercise:

Cardiovascular; which makes your heart, lungs and circulatory system stronger.

Strength Training; which makes your muscles stronger.

There is a long list of benefits from both.

Talk to your doctor before starting any new exercise program.

From TJ News Letter

I am happy to report (belatedly) that Builders Club raised $130.00 at their bake sale two weeks ago.  Proceeds were sent to Share Our Strength, a National organization whose mission it is to stamp out childhood hunger in America.  On a sour note, however, I am sad to tell you that the 125# of aluminum cans collected by the Builders Club last Saturday was apparently stolen from outside the cafeteria before we had a chance to get it to the recycling center.  It likely happened between Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning when I had arranged for their pickup. The proceeds were earmarked to offset the expenses for the lunch that was served to the Community Cleanup volunteers and was especially important this year since we did not receive the corporate sponsorship we had during the past 4 years.  When our generous TJ staff members heard about it, they started a fund to cover the loss.  What a blessing to work with such a wonderful group of folks!

REMINDER TO EVERYONE: Submit your program early and get it in the news letter
