           1860s BEACON RESTORED

Lynda Nenn from the Port Washington Historical Society reports on the restoration of the light house.

In the past 2 years there have been about 4000 visitors. Many see it from the harbor and find the stairs to make the climb for their visit. That will be changing as building construction will be cutting down on the visibility from the harbor. The members of the society are brain storming how to get tourists up there.

The Historical Society is very proud that they were able to restore the property without government money. All money was donated and lots of labor from members and the community. For an idea of what it would have cost to be contractor restored the North Point Lighthouse in Milwaukee cost 1.7 million. The crowing glory, the light tower, was donated by the country of Luxemburg’s Historical Society.

The tower was built in Luxemburg using original drawings. On April 19th the Luxemburg craftsmen who built it came here and installed it. The first light put in the new tower was a 300 watt bulb.

Since then a Fresnel lens duplicate has replace the 300 watt bulb.  The invention of the lens back in 1822 allowed a single oil lamp that could be seen from 1 mile to be seen from 18 miles. The original Fresnel lens was duplicated in acrylic, for $26,000.00, instead of crystal. To duplicate the lens in crystal would have cost $150,000.00.  In 1894 the crystal lens cost $15,000.

Today a single 60 watt bulb is used which comes close to the amount of light given off by the first oil lamp.  If you are out on the lake it is very hard to see because the lights for St Mary’s steeple are so over powering.  Before the light pollution of today it was very easily seen from the lake.  Interestingly several lighthouses were built with the same plans but varied enough so from sea they could be individually be identified.

Lynda put out a call for volunteers to be tour guides. Good way to meet people.
